Forensic Psychological Evaluations: Guidelines for Attorneys

The Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office is offering a free to attend in person or live webcast presentation on Forensic Psychological Evaluations: Guidelines for Attorneys. Pending approval by the NC State Bar, this presentation is for 1 general hour. If you need CLE credit, you must complete the post CLE survey. Please register below:

Where: Mecklenburg Public Defender’s Office 4th floor conference room [720 E 4th St Charlotte] or anyplace you have internet or phone.
What: The presentation will cover the following objectives:
- To review various psycholegal questions that may require mental health expertise/forensic psychological evaluation to properly defend your client facing criminal prosecution
- To provide information about how psychiatric illness may present in the clients of criminal defense attorneys
- To discuss the assessment of malingering
- To explain how to initiate a forensic psychological assessment and what to expect when working with a psychological expert.
Speakers:
Dr. Cantley, Dr. Hart, and Dr. Watters Klosek have over 50 cumulative years of experience conducting forensic psychological evaluations. They have joined forces to create Forensic Minds Consulting. Forensic Minds Consulting uses a team approach to ensure that their psychological evaluations are conducted with the exacting level of integrity, diagnostic accuracy, and objectivity that is critical to high quality forensic evaluations. All experts at Forensic Minds Consulting are licensed, doctoral level psychologists, who bring a wealth of experience and specialized forensic training to their work. The team approach allows cases to be informed by the group’s broad collective expert knowledge base. Two experts work together to complete each evaluation, one of which is identified as the lead psychologist, who will be the primary point of contact. Dr. Nicole Cantley has 16 years of experience in the fields of clinical and forensic psychology. She obtained a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with a forensics emphasis from the California School of Professional Psychology in San Diego. Her forensic training includes a predoctoral forensic psychology internship at the Federal Bureau of Prisons in San Diego and a postdoctoral fellowship at an esteemed private clinical and forensic psychology practice. She gained experience in various settings in California and North Carolina including a private psychiatric hospital, a psychiatric residential facility, a federal correctional center, a juvenile youth development center, and in Mecklenburg County government before she established a successful private practice specializing in forensic, clinical, and neuropsychological evaluations. She is now dedicated to providing consultation and evaluations in the context of criminal forensic psychology.
Dr. Virginia Hart is a highly qualified forensic expert with over 20 years of experience in forensic and clinical psychology. She obtained a PhD in Clinical Psychology with a subspecialty in Psychology and Law from the University of Alabama. Dr. Hart’s extensive forensic training includes a Forensic Psychology predoctoral internship via the Federal Bureau of Prisons and a Forensic Psychology postdoctoral fellowship through the University of Virginia Institute of Law, Psychology and Public Policy. She has a broad range of experience working in various clinical settings, including correctional facilities, state hospitals, forensic state hospitals, inpatient units, and outpatient settings. Dr. Hart is a published researcher in her field and currently serves as an assistant professor with the Wake Forest School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Hart specializes in criminal forensic evaluations and expert services.
Dr. Terri Watters Klosek has extensive experience with the intersection of psychology and law. She holds a doctorate in forensic psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology. Her training includes a forensic pre-doctoral internship with the Bureau of Prisons, as well as a forensic postdoctoral fellowship through Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital. She has worked in a variety of settings including correctional facilities, and forensic hospitals as well as general clinical inpatient and outpatient settings. She also works as a professor of forensic psychology at Queens University in Charlotte. Dr. Watters Klosek brings her comprehensive expertise to conducting unbiased forensic evaluations, utilizing multiple viewpoints and data sources to answer a wide variety of forensic referral questions.
